DungeonBowl Chests

Have you painted your DungeonBowl treasure chests yet? The obvious problem with painting the chests is that, unless you’re a brilliant painter who has managed to make every chest completely identical, there may well be some tell tale differences in the paint jobs that means you now know which chest contains the ball without opening it.

Instead of opening the chest models to see if you’ve found the ball or a bomb, you can just roll a D6 to see what the chest contains and consult the following table:

1st Chest 1 – 5: The chest contains a bomb
6: The chest contains the ball
2nd Chest 1: Reroll until you get a result that isn’t a 1
2 – 5: The chest contains a bomb
6: The chest contains the ball
3rd Chest 1 – 2: Reroll until you get a result that isn’t a 1 or 2
3 – 5: The chest contains a bomb
6: The chest contains the ball
4th Chest 1 – 4: The chest contains a bomb
5 – 6: The chest contains the ball
5th Chest 1 – 3: The chest contains a bomb
4 – 6: The chest contains the ball
6th Chest This chest must contain the ball

That gives you the same odds of finding the ball as opening the chest models themselves.

Or get yourself 6 playing cards, for example an ace, and five other cards. Each time you open a chest you draw a card and if you get the ace you’ve found the ball.

Just don’t do what I’ve seen suggested elsewhere which is you roll a D6, finding the ball on a 6+, but adding +1 for each chest that has already been opened. Doing that completely skews the odds so the second chest where the odds of finding the ball should be 1/5 actually ends up with odds of 1/3.
