Starting Rosters – Chaos Chosen

Overview

Chaos Chosen feature expensive players with good stat lines but also a of lack basic skills such as Block and Sure Hands. Consequently a Chaos Chosen starting roster is all about compromise between buying the expensive Blockers and getting enough Team Rerolls to compensate for the lack of skills.

Player Types

  • Chosen Blockers – these guys are the stars of every Chaos Chosen team but they come with a hefty 100K price tag. Ideally a starting roster will include all four of them.
  • Beastman Runners – the workhorses of a Chaos Chosen team. The Beastmen will be making up the bulk of the players on the team and will eventually develop into a wide range of roles to cover ball handling duties, killer blitzers etc..
  • Big Guys – a Big Guy is by no means essential to a Chaos Chosen roster, but it is always fun to have one. Chaos Chosen rosters used to be limited to just Minotaurs but now they can have one Big Guy chosen from either an Chaos Ogre, Chaos Troll or a Minotaur. All of them bring some ST5 muscle to the team and have Primary access to Mutation skills in addition to the usual Strength skills so they have a lot more options for development than most Big Guys.

Which Big Guy To Pick

  • Minotaur – this is the classic Big Guy for the Chaos Chosen team. Being able to blitz with ST6 is great however a good Chaos Chosen coach will often prefer to use a Beastman or Blocker for the most crucial blitzes to avoid the 1/6 chance of failing the Unchanneled Fury roll. Unchanneled Fury is probably the best nega-trait for a Big Guy as failing does not result in the loss of Tackle Zones so a Minotaur can continue to provide assists even if it fails the roll. Most Big Guys are AV10+ but a Minotaur is only AV9+ so they are quite vulnerable compared to other Big Guys. Also they are the most expensive option with a price tag of 150K.
  • Chaos Troll – the Troll is slow and stupid but he’s the cheapest of the Big Guys at only 110K. The price tag alone makes the Troll a good choice, especially for coaches who like to use their Big Guys as road blocks. Stick a Troll on the Line Of Scrimmage and leave him there tying up opposing players. The Chaos Troll can Regenerate, and has Projectile Vomit which is fun especially when he is stood next to a low armour opponent with Block and Dodge. He can also throw teammates but a Chaos Chosen team has no Right Stuff players so Throw Team Mate is useless unless you acquire a Right Stuff player such as Crumbleberry as as inducement.
  • Chaos Ogre – the Ogre is a tough Big Guy having AV10+ like the Troll, but also having Thick Skull making him difficult to remove from the pitch. Bonehead makes him the most flexible Big Guy as he doesn’t need his teammates to chaperone him, nor does he have the unreliability of the Minotaur when he is not blocking or blitzing. Like the Troll, the Ogre also has the almost useless Throw Teammate trait that will never be used. Overall however he’s an expensive choice at 140K. The Ogre is probably the worst of the three Big Guys – if you want a road block then take the Troll, if you want a more actively offensive Big Guy then take the Minotaur.
  • Forget about it – not all Chaos Chosen coaches are fans of the Big Guys. A Chaos Chosen team is potentially quite strong with four ST4 Blockers and the rest of the team being Beastmen who can blitz at ST4 using their Horns, so an unreliable ST5 player isn’t essential.

Standard Rosters

These are probably the best Chaos Chosen rosters, starting off with most or all of the Chosen Blitzers.

This is the classic starting roster for those who want all of the high ST players from the start. Only having a single Team Reroll is a serious disadvantage however.

A variation with the Ogre instead of the Minotaur. Unfortunately the savings from taking the Ogre are nowhere near enough to get a second reroll.

My personal favourite starting roster. Maximum strength, plus the significantly cheaper price of the Troll allows for a second Team Reroll.

If you don’t want an unreliable Big Guy then this is the roster to go for.

1 x Minotaur150K

Compromising on the number of Chosen Blockers allows for an extra Team Reroll. You could swap out the Minotaur for the Ogre to save an extra 10K.

The savings from taking a Troll instead of Minotaur means you have enough cash leftover to take an Apothecary, or invest in Dedicated Fans to quickly get the cash for the 4th Blocker.

“All Goat” Rosters

They aren’t necessarily the most competitive rosters but you can forget about the Chosen Blockers and have a team made up entirely of Beastmen plus a Big Guy, either as a thematic team, or to maximise Team Rerolls on the starting roster and pick up the Chosen Blockers later. One advantage of forgoing the Chosen Blockers is that 12, or even 13 player starting rosters are possible.

Lots Of Goats

12 x Beastman Runners720K
4 x Team Rerolls240K
Total960K
Lots of Beastmen and all the Team Rerolls you are likely to ever want, plus 40K which you can put towards an Apothecary or Dedicated Fans. Note that Beastmen and Team Rerolls both cost 60K so you can swap out Team Rerolls for extra Beastmen on a 1 for 1 basis. 13 Beastmen and 3 Team Rerolls would be a reasonable variation of this roster, but Team Rerolls are vitally important so it would not be wise to sacrifice too many for a deeper bench.

11 x Beastman Runners660K
1 x Troll110K
3 x Team Rerolls180K

A 12 player starting roster with a respectable 3 Team Rerolls. Spend the remaining 50K on an Apothecary or on Dedicated Fans if you want to save up for the Chosen Blockers.
All Goat Plus Minotaur

11 x Beastman Runners660K

The minotaur is more expensive but a 12 player starting roster with 3 Team Rerolls is affordable. Spend the remaining 10K on Dedicated Fans. Swap the Minotaur for the Ogre and get an extra 10K for more Dedicated Fans.

Special Rules

Chaos Chosen teams must choose between Favoured Of Khorne, Favoured Of Slaanesh, Favoured Of Nurgle, Favoured Of Tzeentch, or Favoured Of Chaos Undivided. Really the only options you should be considering are Favoured Of Khorne or Favoured Of Nurgle.

Favoured Of Khorne will give you access to a few extra Star Players – Scylla and Max Spleenripper.

Favoured Of Nurgle will give you access to Bilerot and the (almost useless) Plague Doctor inducement. If you are using the inducements from DeathZone you’ll also get access to Cavorting Nurglings and the Horticulturalist Of Nurgle.

Favoured Of Chaos Undivided, Slaanesh, and Tzeentch have no inducements specific to them. Unless you happen to be playing in a league using the Cursed Skull Goblet league rules from Spike! issue 13 then there is no benefit to choosing Favoured Of Slaanesh, Favoured Of Tzeentch, or Favoured Of Chaos Undivided.
